Products Module Overview

Each item that you sell in your store is an individual product. Correctly configuring your products, their details, and their structural relationship to other products in your store is tremendously important when you set up your store. Even if your store does not initially sell a wide variety of items, it is worthwhile to set up its product structure in a logical manner, so that subsequent expansion or alteration can be carried out with minimal effort and complication.

In order to do this, you should be familiar with a few concepts:

    1- Product types:

    2- Product variations:

    3- Product categories:

    4- Product brands:

    5- Inventory management:

    6- Product reviews.

1- Product Types

1- BitCart defines two basic types of product: physical and downloadable. Your store can carry either type, or both.

2- Physical products are those that require shipping, whereas downloadable products are those (such as e-books, software or digital art) that, after purchase, a customer can simply download from your store's server. Customers can do this either by clicking a link that displays after they have successfully placed their order, or by logging into your store and checking their order status screen.

3- When a customer orders a physical product, a record is added to the orders list (see Viewing and Managing Orders) which can be turned into a shipment. However, when a downloadable product is purchased (and paid for) the record that is added to the order list is marked Completed and cannot be transformed into a shipment.

2- Product Variations

You can create product variations for each of your store's products. A product variation is a variable that describes different versions of the product. For example, you can sell a T-shirt in a variety of sizes.

You can configure multiple variations. For example, you can sell a T-shirt in a variety of sizes, and a variety of colors.

Product variations are contained within variation sets. Variation sets can contain multiple variations. When you have created a variation set, you can then apply the variation set to a product. Create another variation set to configure the variations available for a different product.

Among other things, variation sets allow you to create multiple variations with the same name (for example "color"), but with different value sets.

For example, you can create one variation set with the following variations:

and then apply the variation set to a T-shirt in your store. You can then create a second variation set with the following variations:

and then apply the variation set to a pair of trousers in your store.

Color (black, white, and blue, green)

Size (S, M, L, XL, XXL)

Color (black, olive, woodland cameo, desert cameo) Size: (28, 30, 32, 36, 38, 40, 42)

Note: See Adding and Editing Product Variations for information on creating a variation set. Once you have created a variation set, see Product Variations for information on applying it to a product.

3- Product Categories

Product categories are groups of similar products that you specify. Customers can use product category pages to see all types of similar product, regardless of brand, on a single screen.

Categories use parent-child architecture. This means that you can set up a top-level category (for example, "Hats"), and multiple sub-categories (for example, "Men's hats" and "Women's hats").

As with individual product pages, you can add descriptive text to a category or subcategory page, allowing you to introduce your store's selection to the customer.

4- Product Brands

Use product brands to allow customers to browse all available products from a single manufacturer in a single page. First set up a brand, and then assign products to the brand. Each brand available displays on your store's main page.

In this way, customers have a variety of ways to reach each item in your store from the main page; by clicking on a brand name (for example, "Harley Davidson"), clicking on a category (for example, "Motorcycle boots"), performing a search (for example, "Harley boots"), or by clicking a featured product, bestselling product, or new product.

5- Inventory Management

BitCart allows you to track and manage your inventory in a variety of ways. Firstly, you can associate a unique SKU (Stock-Keeping Unit) code to every product you sell, and every variation of a product. If you already use a stock-keeping or part-numbering system that uses a unit identification system based on unique alphanumeric codes, you can use BitCart in conjunction with this system.

BitCart also has an inventory management system that allows you to specify a "low stock level" and a "current stock level" for a product (or variation) when you first configure it. BitCart tracks outgoing stock automatically, and provides you with a visual warning when the low stock level has been reached or exceeded. You can also have BitCart email you when the low stock level is reached; see Configuring Website Settings

Note: For information on tracking inventory once it has been shipped out to a customer, see Tracking Numbers.

6- Product Reviews

When customers see reviews and customer-generated feedback on your store's pages, they are far more likely to trust your store and make purchases from it. BitCart allows your store's customers (and other users) to submit reviews of your products. Each review contains a title, a star rating, and review text. These reviews display on the relevant product's page.

By default, anyone who visits your store can write a review of any of your products. BitCart protects against automatic review submissions (nuisance reviews submitted by software bots) by using CAPTCHA security, which allows a user to submit a review only after reading and entering a string of characters displayed on-screen in a manner that is not machine-readable.

However, BitCart cannot automatically detect inaccurate, offensive, stupid, malicious or otherwise undesirable reviews submitted by users. This can be done only by a human administrator. For this reason, you must approve each user-submitted review before it displays on the site.

Once you have approved a review (and edited it, if necessary) the review displays on the product's page in your store.

Note: CAPTCHA stands for "Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart". A Turing test, named after mathematician and cryptographer Alan Turing, is a test intended to differentiate between an intelligent agent (such as a human), and an unintelligent agent (such as a piece of software). Ideally, only intelligent agents can pass a Turing test.
